Recently the cast and director of the film ‘Sweet & Sour’ held an online press conference to discuss their film and answer questions from the media.
The cast of “Sweet & Sour” Jang Ki Yong, Chae Soo Bin, and f(x)’s Krystal participated in an online press conference with their director Lee Gye Buk. “Sweet & Sour” is a romantic comedy film that tells about the sweet taste of the beginning of a romantic relationship and the rapid and bitter transformation of love. It centers around the “sweet” couple Jang Hyuk (Jang Ki Yong) and Da Eun (Chae Soo Bin), whose relationship becomes “sour” with the charming presence of Bo Young (Krystal) amid their relationship.
The three actors revealed that the reason they chose to star in this film was because of its relatable quality. Jang Ki Yong explained, “It was really fun when I first read the script. Jang Hyuk, Da Eun, and Bo Young all look so real, and I thought it would be fun to shoot on set with all the other actors.”
Chae Soo Bin also added, “I understand the story of this film because it depicts a realistic dating in the real world. But I also feel another charm of the story that is not easy to guess.”
All the characters in ‘Sweet & Sour’ have realistic aspects as a foundation, such as Jung Da-Eun (Chae Soo-bin) is a nurse who works with a busy schedule and long hours because of that she experiences fatigue both in work and dating. Jang Hyuk (Jang Ki-Yong) is a hard worker who gets the opportunity to work in a large company and wants to show his best ability to become a permanent employee there.
Regarding her character Bo Young, Krystal commented, “I was very worried that I might look evil in the film. I worked hard to show a lot of good things about Bo Young in it. Bo Young’s charm is that she is honest and fearless but she is very clumsy, so I think it will be a new side for her.”
Jang Ki Yong revealed that Jang Hyuk’s figure is very similar to him. Even the director asked him to be himself during filming. However, that doesn’t mean Ki Yong likes Jang Hyuk’s character who cheated on Da Eun.
“The shooting process was fun because even though I was on set I was acting like myself. Of course, there are some things to hate about Jang Hyuk, but he also has a positive side. Viewers will be able to understand why Jang Hyuk behaves like that if they watch it follow Jang Hyuk’s emotional sequence,” said Jang Ki Yong.
Director Lee Gye Byuk explained, “Young people today are much busier than us. Living so busy makes dating life difficult and among those busy people, I’m one of the same characters as Da Eun, a nurse who works part-time on a 3 shift system, so her days off are uncertain. On the other hand, there is Jang Hyuk who wants to be a permanent employee at a big company so he works late and can’t enjoy his dating life with Da Eun. However, because he’s a busy young man, I created the character Bo Young who became close to Jang Hyuk because they spent so much time together. I think it describes the lives of young people these days.”
Jang Ki-Yong talked about the great chemistry between the two actresses. He said, “I find the chemistry between Jang Hyeok and Bo-Yeong very pleasant. Soo-Jung mentions that he has a goofy side, and great energy. We had to redo some scenes because we laughed out loud.”
While Chae Soo-bin explains how he and Jang Ki-Yong have more quarrel scenes than friendly scenes, though we can still watch their sweet scenes.
‘Sweet & Sour’ premieres in 190 countries on June 4 on Netflix.
