Pope Francis on Sunday (9/5/2021) called for an end to violence in Jerusalem. Speaking before his congregation at St. Peter’s in Rome, he encouraged various stakeholders to find solutions to the crisis in the holy city.
“Violence will in fact give rise to violence, so stop this clash immediately,” said Fransiskus today and quoted from the Anadolu news agency , Turkey.
The call started because there were clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police that broke out outside the city of Jerusalem on Saturday, May 8, 2021. The clash was triggered by an attempt by the Israeli police to disperse thousands of Palestinian Muslims who were praying and at the same time commemorating Lailatul Qadr, at the Al Aqsa Mosque. However, the dispersal action was instead carried out by throwing shock grenades and water cannons.
Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police left 80 residents injured
The ANTARA news agency reported that clashes took place between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police outside the Old City of Jerusalem on Saturday, May 8, 2021, when tens of thousands of Muslim worshipers prayed on the Islamic holy night of Lailatul Qadar.

According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 80 people were injured, including minors and one year old. A total of 14 people were taken to hospital. Meanwhile Israeli police said one officer was injured.

MUI urges the world to impose sanctions on Israel
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) calls on all countries to suppress and impose sanctions on Israel for attacking Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday, May 7, 2021.
“This empathetic and constructive step can also be taken by European Union countries and others,” said the Head of MUI for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, as quoted by ANTARA , Sunday (9/5/2021).

“Together these countries can exert international pressure on Israel through the United Nations. If necessary, Israel will be given international sanctions,” Sudarnoto said.
