reportedly working hard to extend Ousmane Dembele’s contract at Camp Nou.
The 24-year-old’s contract with Ronald Koeman’s team will expire next June. Reportedly, Dembele has not agreed to extend the contract.
Dembele has a serious knee injury that requires surgery. As a result, he could not leave Barcelona this summer. However, there is still widespread speculation surrounding his future.
A recent report claims that Manchester United could sign the Frenchman on a free transfer next summer. The Red Devils could enter into contract talks with the forward in January 2022.
However, according to Sport, Barcelona is working on a contract renewal for the former Rennes youth player, as they know they can let him leave for nothing.
Dembele, who has struggled with several injury problems during his time at Barcelona, is also believed to be a target for Italian giants Juventus.
Injuries at Euro 2020
Ousmane Dembele suffered an injury in the final minutes of France’s match against Hungary in Budapest, Saturday (19/6/2021). X-ray results showed the Barcelona player’s knee would not heal in time to return to play in the European Cup.
Dembele’s contract with Barcelona only has one year remaining. He could leave the club for free in the summer of 2022.
That’s what Barcelona does not want. The reason is, they spent 105 million euros when they brought in Dembele from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.
Negotiations for a contract extension between the Spanish giants Barcelona and their winger, Ousmane Dembele, have not met a common ground.
The French player, who is currently with his country’s national team competing in Euro 2020, the contract expires in June 2022. The Blaugrana do not want him to leave on a free transfer.
In addition, Ousmane Dembele will be able to negotiate with other clubs across Europe from January 2022 if he fails to agree to terms by then.
Barcelona signed the Frenchman from the German side Borussia Dortmund in August 2017 for around £90m with an additional £34m in the contract clause.
Dembele has scored 30 goals and provided 21 assists in 118 appearances for the Catalan club, including 11 goals and five assists during the 2020-2021 season. Most of his career at Camp Nou was spent on the operating table.
He had several times wanted to be sold by Barcelona but failed because of injuries. When this one player is fit, Barcelona hopes not to lose the city.
Dembele’s attitude in stalling negotiations for a contract extension began to anger Barcelona officials. They felt the players did not respect them, who continued to support him during his time off the gridiron.
Manchester United are heavily attracted
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is interested in signing him as a backup scenario if Jadon Sancho’s transfer ends.
“Man United would have switched to Dembele at the end of the last transfer window when they couldn’t get Jadon Sancho,” said transfer market expert Duncan Castles.
“They made some offers and carried out intense negotiations with Barcelona. That’s something they played since the beginning of the transfer window last summer. They aggressively asked Barca whether Dembele was available for purchase,” he added.
